  Introduction

  This book is in loving memory of my mother Geraldine Daugherty. As a child, I can remember my mother sitting over her morning coffee and drawing one card from a deck of playing cards she kept nearby in a kitchen drawer. At the time, I paid little attention to what she was doing. Later, after my father and mother died, as I was packing up their possessions, I ran into my mother’s deck of cards. They brought tears to my eyes—I could see her sitting at the kitchen table with her cup of steaming hot coffee, shuffling the deck and drawing one card. Although the ink was faded and almost unreadable after many years and countless shuffles, I was surprised to find that my mother had written on each card the card’s meaning in a fortune telling layout.

  That was the beginning of my interest in the cards and their message. I often shuffle my deck and pull a card to see what theme, message, advice, or issue will be the centerpiece of the day. The advice and warnings of the cards have proved very valuable to me. For this reason, I have decided to share the information that I uncovered so long ago. I hope that you, the reader of this book, receive as much help, insight, and guidance from and through the cards as I have.

  Chapter I

  Card Layouts

  There are two very simple ways to tell fortunes with playing cards. The first one is the Card of the Day reading which is explained in the introduction. Shuffle the cards thoroughly and draw a card to answer a question or to give you insight into the day ahead. If you feel you need additional information, greater clarity, or advice, just draw another card.

  The second method is more detailed and used to predict the present, near future, and far future. After the cards are thoroughly shuffled, lay out nine of them in three rows. The first row is cards one thru three, and they represent the present. The second row is cards three thru six, and they represent the near future. The third row is cards six thru nine, and they represent the far future. Normally, the subject of the reading is the shuffler of the cards and the card reader does the card lay out. If the subject of the reading is not present, the reader must shuffle as well as lay out the cards so special attention must be paid to having no distractions and to centering concentration on the subject of the reading so that a valid reading will result. No one is certain why card reading is accurate and works, but it appear that handling the cards sets in motion an electromagnetic energy field that is attuned to the subject’s needs, present state of being, and the realm of strong future possibilities. It is those electromagnetic vibrations that influence the cards to appear as they do in the card reading. Always shuffle the cards thoroughly and for several minutes so they have a chance to become familiar with the person receiving the reading who is referred to here as the subject of the reading.

  To clarify the above card reading layout, the first three cards clarify and explain the subject’s present situation. The second three cards indicate the events coming to pass within a few weeks or months which is described as the near future. The third three cards give the bigger picture of what lies ahead in the next year or two which is described as the far future.

  Always keep in mind whether you are giving or receiving a card reading that nothing in the future is cast in cement. The future is always dynamic, fluid, and changing. The cards will point to possibilities and probabilities in view of the current situation, alerting the subject of possible opportunities and warning the subject of possible danger or ill fortune. All changes, large and small, affect the outcome of future events. Always focus on the positive even if the cards indicate a negative situation. Positive and negative are two side of the same coin. If attention is centered on the positive, a negative situation may be turned around into a major positive in the subject’s life. Two primary examples that illustrate the negative becoming a positive are: 1) A monetary loss indicated by the cards being met with re-evaluation of all finances and financial dealings so that the result is a more conservative and secure financial future. 2) A health problem or depression indicated by the cards is countered with health check-ups and search for the source of depression so that lifestyle changes result in being on the track for health and happiness. Chapter VI has more on changing your future.

  If the cards warn of problems ahead and the subject does nothing to meet those challenges, then the subject has no one to blame for pitfalls and lack of success but himself. When the subject moves to counter negativity in a card reading, the cards serve as a catalyst to action and moving the subject toward realizing a goal or ambition. One of the primary messages of the cards is that of achieving success by seizing opportunities and doing something to move yourself in the direction of success and happiness.

  When doing a card reading or any kind of fortune telling, concentrate on the task at hand and avoid discussions that have no bearing on the task at hand. Save the chit-chat about parties, latest gossip, and TV shows for when the reading is over. Discussions that have no bearing on the reading distract the reader and confuse the cards. Additionally, it is not good to gloat or brag about forecasts of good luck and good fortune because the jealousy or envy of others may change the tide of what has been foretold. Instead, be thankful to God and the Universe for their help and guidance and move on to deal with areas that hold potential problems or difficulties.

  Chapter II

  Card Meanings

  Spades

  ACE OF SPADES

  The symbol for the card is the crossed swords—it warns of the threat of attack, assault, or strife in a relationship. Study the card’s placement in the layout to determine when, then focus on being prepared and ready to defend

  yourself. Other nearby cards may give clues regarding whether the attack is likely to be verbal or physical and who might deliver the blows. Sorrow is also indicated.

  TWO OF SPADES

  The card’s symbol is a star—it indicates success in many areas of endeavor, but do not think that it speaks of an easy ride to success. You still need to apply yourself to achieve the success the card says is possible and probable. If it appears in the far future line of cards, it may indicate an unlucky event.

  THREE OF SPADES

  The “pig” card is one of the most positive cards in the deck. The three of

  Spades indicates the coming of unbelievable good luck, abundance in all things, the attainment of honors and recognition, and the achievement of ambitions. So “hog” it up!

  FOUR OF SPADES

  Symbolized by the eye, it accents friendship. In the present and near

  future part of the layout, read it as concern of close friends or their careful scrutiny of your activities. In the far future part of the layout, your activities may cause your friends to become suspicious of you. The ultimate message of the card is to engage only in activities that are honest and to be open in your dealings with your friends.

  FIVE OF SPADES

/>   The “coffin” card may foretell acute illness or losses of property or possessions. Tell your subject to spend some time focusing on health issues, finances, and security in general to avoid the negativity of this card.

  SIX OF SPADES

  Symbolized by the mouse, the six of Spades warns of loss through theft. In the present or near future part of the layout, the loss may be recovered after much difficulty, struggle, and hard work. In the far future part of the layout, the loss may not be regained in spite of all your efforts. To avert this threat, tell your subject to spend time centered on security with regard to money and possessions.

  SEVEN OF SPADES

  The symbol for the seven of Spades is clouds. The subject must go outside and look at the clouds in the sky at twilight. If the clouds are dark or the dark side of the cloud appears to be lowest in the sky, the card speaks of problems within the immediate family or a divorce. If the clouds appear bright or seem to send bright rays downward, the card is speaking of happiness within the home and family circle. In general, the seven of Spades is a card of everyday affairs, normalcy, and loving relationships.

  EIGHT OF SPADES

  Card of the “mountains,” the eight of Spades warns of the presence of a strong and mighty enemy. Look around you: if mountains are nearby, your enemy is very near, but if they are at a distance, your enemy is farther away. Suggest that the subject cancel mountain vacations for a while to avoid the negativity of the card until the threat has passed. In addition, the subject needs to focus on health as the eight indicates possible illness. As a card of waste, cancellation, and rejection, the subject needs to be aware of how resources are being managed and how responsibilities are met.

  NINE OF SPADES

  Represented by bright red roses, it promises beauty in your life as well as robust health or an improvement in the subject’s physical and mental health condition by giving him a greater sense of well-being.

  TEN OF SPADES

  The rod is the symbol for this card. In the present or near future of the layout, it predicts family disagreements or quarrels, grief or possible loss of freedom due to obligations, former commitments, and heavy responsibilities. The subject should try to be compromising and adaptable when dealing with family members to avoid a major separation or argument. If the ten appears in the far future part of the layout, financial losses are probable if immediate steps are not taken to prevent them.

  JACK OF SPADES

  The card of the shepherd or the farmer, the Jack of Spades indicates a love of life, pleasure through social interaction with others, and communication with nature by being outdoors. When this card appears, it is time to plan social gatherings with friends and family. The Jack of Spades may also indicate the appearance of a student or young person who is focused on mischief, deception, or intrigue,

  QUEEN OF SPADES

  Symbolized by Cupid and his arrows piercing a heart, the Queen foretells love and/or someone looking at you with love and longing in their eyes. Study the layout carefully to determine when a love affair is likely to blossom from this card. The subject also needs to avoid intrigue, gossip, and jealous or spiteful women.

  KING OF SPADES

  Represented by a bride, the King of Spades indicates fulfillment of the subject’s ambitions and goals whether the subject is married or not. If the subject is married, the important message of this card is to collaborate and work together as a couple to reach the success indicated by the card. Sometimes the King of Spades indicates the arrival of an older man who is a widower or lawyer; study this person’s intentions carefully because he may be trying to undermine the fortune of the card.

  Clubs

  ACE OF CLUBS

  Clouds and a crossroads are the symbols for the ace of Clubs. When the ace appears in the layout, walk outside—bright shining clouds indicate there is no need to worry but dark clouds speak of trouble on the horizon. If the card appears in the far future part of the layout, your chances of averting or overcoming the negativity of the card are increased. The ace of Clubs also calls for practical common sense approach when dealing with difficulties or problematical people. On the positive side, the ace of Clubs may herald good luck or good news arriving by letter or email.

  TWO OF CLUBS

  Symbolized by railroad tracks, the two of Clubs indicates a long journey as well as possible news relating to money. If it appears near the eight of Diamonds in the layout, a serious accident is possible so caution is advised instead of taking risks. If it appears near the six of Spades in the layout, a robbery is possible. The subject needs to focus on general security and safety.

  THREE OF CLUBS

  Represented by a blooming fruit tree, the three of Clubs speaks of reaching out to attain fulfillment of hopes and dreams. Focus on making right choices and meeting challenges encountered along the way. Education and knowledge are also stressed by the card as well as opportunities for self-promotion.

  FOUR OF CLUBS

  The four of Clubs is the “key” card. The key brings success and allows the subject of the reading to reap rewards through a successful venture. If the card is surrounded by unlucky cards in the layout, an illness is indicated so the focus should be on improving health and building strength so the illness will be short and not extremely serious.

  FIVE OF CLUBS

  Symbolized by the clover leaf, the card indicates the arrival of good news. However, if the card is near cloud cards (seven of spades, ace of clubs, ten of clubs) or if there are lots of clouds in the sky when you look out the window, the clover leaf warns of coming problems and speaks of the need to be prepared even though they are likely to be minor and short-lived. If the sky is clear of clouds and no cloud cards appear near it in the layout, good news, good luck, and much happiness are foretold.

  SIX OF CLUBS

  Represented by a bolt of lightning, the six of Clubs indicates more than one surprise is on its way to you. Warn the subject that some of them are likely to be positive in nature while others are likely to be unpleasant and negative.

  Advise calling on practicality and common sense as well as patience when dealing with these negative unforeseen events and news because, in dealing with them head on, strength of character and moral fiber result.

  SEVEN OF CLUBS

  Card of the white lilies, the seven of Clubs foretells happiness as long as the subject focuses on the beauty of the lilies with a positive attitude, enjoyment of life, and centering on happy outcomes. The subject may need to develop more self-confidence and have more faith and trust in family and friends as well as humanity in general. Nearby cloud cards (seven of Spades, ace of Clubs, ten of Clubs) in the layout may indicate sorrow so that the subject will need to rely on others for strength and support. On the positive side, the seven of Clubs foretells the passing of financial worries or short-lived financial concerns.

  EIGHT OF CLUBS

  Symbolized by the snake, the eight of Clubs indicates someone in your circle of family, friends, close associates, and co-workers is working against you; it is a card indicating calculated trouble coming from those in the subject’s immediate environment. Unforeseen problems, personal losses, or financial losses may also be indicated by the card. If it appears in the present or near future part of the layout, the effect is likely to be more keenly felt than if it should turn up in the far future part of the layout. If it is in the far future part of the layout, the subject needs to be vigilant and alert to the possibilities of this card to avoid its negativity.

  NINE OF CLUBS

  Represented by a luscious tree and flower filled park, the card speaks of love, happiness, and natural beauty. It foretells an unexpected gift or money. A new love is foretold if the card appears in the present or near future part of the card layout. If the card holds any warnings, it is the need for honesty, good intentions, and openness in a relationship so it can grow and develop for the maximum happiness of both individuals. If the card appears in the far future part of the layout, false friends and betrayal a
re possible so that caution is advised in relationships.

  TEN OF CLUBS

  The ten of Clubs is symbolized by a tower surrounded by clouds. It indicates sickness and a possible death among your circle of friends, co-workers, and neighbors. In this way, the card indicates a test of strength and faith in friendship and love because the subject will need to be there to support others in their time of need. Those who meet the demands made on them by the ten of clubs will be rewarded with prosperity and success.

  JACK OF CLUBS

  Represented by a gold medallion, the Jack of Clubs indicates recognition and honor, especially in connection with your work and business efforts. The subject may be surprised because it has seemed that labors have gone unrecognized and unnoticed when, in reality, others have been taking note and are appreciative of responsible efforts. If the Jack appears near the three of diamonds in the card layout, success is assured, especially in business.

  QUEEN OF CLUBS

  Known as the “wine” card, it signifies positive cheerfulness and good times socially. If nothing appears on the subject’s social calendar, something needs to be planned. The subject needs to avoid hard liquor because it will serve to cancel out the positive promise of the queen and leave the subject depressed and in a negative frame of mind. Warning: Avoid those who are jealous and over-bearing when this card appears.

  KING OF CLUBS

  The card of the bear indicates strength and success, especially in speculative ventures, business investments like stocks or bonds, and in real estate. It invites the subject to spend some time and energy focusing on what can be done to promote the success promised by the card because this card will not cause good fortune to drop into one’s lap. The card may also represent a warm-hearted, generous man who is a true friend.

  Hearts

  ACE OF HEARTS

  Symbolized by the fox, the ace of Hearts is a warning that trouble is brewing quietly and behind the scenes for the subject. Appearing in the present or near future part of the card layout, it indicates trusted close friends, acquaintances, or co-workers will bring betrayal or undermine a credibility that has been carefully developed over a period of time. If the card appears in the far future part of the layout or if it is turned over by someone other than the subject of the reading, the danger is not as intense but vigilance needs to be maintained.
